Introducing the New Kia Picanto

Introduced in 2004, the original Kia Picanto was a robust and functional alternative to other city cars that were on the market. Fast forward to the present day, and the latest generation Picanto has clearly come on leaps and bounds, with a stylish design having been implemented throughout the whole car.

The latest entry into the Picanto family tree is more than just a pretty face though, because despite being a small car, it comes with grown-up driving manners and a host of other technologies that are usually found on larger cars.

As a result of the changes, the New Picanto is more accomplished than ever and punches well above its weight class. Keep on reading to discover more about Kia’s award-winning city car.

Design and Practicality

Practicality isn’t usually a city car’s strong suit, but Kia have done an exceptional job of maximising the space available inside the New Picanto.

For starters, each model across the range comes with five doors as standard, making access to the rear seats nice and easy. You can also fit a child’s seat thanks to the addition of the Isofix anchor points in the back seats.

The New Picanto is a four-seat city car, unless you opt for the X-Line or X-Line S models that are 30mm wider and 15mm taller than other New Picanto models and feature five seats.

General room for passengers is good despite the New Picanto’s modest size, but we’d recommend one of Kia’s bigger cars if you regularly have taller adults sat in the back. With 255 litres to play with, the boot can easily carry your weekly food shop. Fold the rear seats down and you get a smidgen over 1,000 litres of space at your disposal.

Technology and Safety

There’s a wide range of New Picanto models to choose from, all of which come generously equipped as standard. For example, the entry-level version comes with Hill-Start Assist Control, electric front windows and Automatic Headlight Control.

As you move up the range you start to unlock luxuries such as air-conditioning, LED daytime running lights, and cruise control. There’s even a slick 8-inch multimedia system on higher grades, which brings Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ with it for the ultimate in smartphone connectivity.

There’s a number of safety features available, which include:

  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist
  • Rear Parking Sensors
  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
  • Tyre Pressure Monitoring System

Economy and Performance

The New Picanto is available with two new ‘Smartstream’ petrol engines that maximise efficiency and lower CO2 emissions compared to their predecessors.

If you spend all of your time in the city, then the 66 bhp 1.0-litre model is ideal. It feels punchy in a small car like the New Picanto, yet can still return over 58 mpg.

Also available is the most powerful engine to ever appear in a Picanto; a turbocharged 1.0-litre unit with 99 bhp. It feels more spritely without compromising on fuel efficiency and is only available in the GT-Line models.

A 5-speed manual is standard across the range, although you can opt for a 5-speed automatic gearbox on some models.

KIA Picanto 2024

While Mitsubishi and Nissan have stopped making small hatchbacks, Kia will continue to sell its Picanto small car in Australia for a while.

Kia Australia’s senior supervisor of item arranging, Roland Rivero affirmed that the model is expected to get a facelift in 2024.

He stated that Picanto will still be with us for a long time. It will actually undergo a facelift (PE2) the following year.

Rivero emphasized the Picanto’s significance not only as a stand-alone model but also as a vehicle that connects the rest of the Kia lineup.

We hope that after a positive Picanto experience, customers will move on to an SUV or a Cerato, depending on their life stage.

Rivero went on to say that they see Picanto as a very important product. The MG3 small car and the Kia Picanto are both smaller and cost less than AU$20,000 before on-road costs.

There are currently three different versions of the Picanto:S, GT, and GT-Line.The GT-Line starts at AU$17,440, the flagship GT at AU$20,490, and the S starts at AU$15,990 before on-road costs.

The Picanto is available with two powertrains: a 1.2-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine with 62kW/122Nm of power and a smaller-diameter 1.0-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine with 74kW/172Nm of power in the GT flagship model.

2024 Kia Picanto may arrive in following trims — S Manual, S Auto, GT Line Manual, GT Line Auto, GT Manual.

Used Kia Picanto

The Kia Picanto is a well-built city car that offers a great blend of affordability and quality.

City cars are usually designed to fulfil a simple remit: affordable to buy and brimming with character. The Picanto excels in both of these key areas by offering a similar build quality to the Toyota Aygo and better value for money than the popular Volkswagen up! .

That great value has carried over to the used car market, but why consider a used Picanto?

  • Affordable to buy and run
  • Decent interior design
  • Younger models still benefit from Kia’s class-leading warranty
  • Efficient range of engines
  • Easy to drive

Engines and Driving Experience

Although city cars don’t have the same power as their larger counterparts, they do benefit from being light. As a result, the Picanto feels eager when driving around town and is easy to manoeuvre in confined spaces. The Picanto doesn’t falter when venturing outside of the city either, although there’s a bit of wind and engine noise on motorways.

The entry-level 1.0-litre petrol engine with 66bhp is best-suited to urban use, and will return up to 50.4mpg. If you encounter hills on a regular basis, then we’d recommend the larger 1.25-litre unit. The 18bhp hike to 84bhp may not sound much, but it does help. Plus, this engine can achieve up to 49.6mpg.

A turbocharged 1.0-litre petrol sits at the top of the range. The 99bhp figure is unlikely to impress your friends, but it does get the lightweight Picanto shifting down the road quite swiftly, with 0 to 62mph taking just 9.8 seconds. It’ll return up to 48.7mpg for good measure.

Practicality and Running Costs

Breaking the mould with a versatile interior and a decent amount of head room, the Picanto is more practical than you’d initially think. The vast majority of used cars will have 5-doors, making it possible to give your friends a lift without them having to clamber over a folded front seat.

At 255 litres, the boot may not sound overly commodious. However, when you consider that close rivals, such as the Citroën C1, have a 196-litre boot, you start to realise the Picanto punches above its weight. Naturally, the rear seats can fold forward to create a 1,010-litre space.

Opt for a younger model and you’ll benefit from Kia’s 7-year warranty, which certainly provides peace of mind when buying. Being a small car, servicing and maintenance costs are affordable, while annual premiums shouldn’t be too offensive because the Picanto doesn’t exceed insurance group 10.

Interior, Technology and Safety

Compared to the likes of the Volkswagen up!, the Picanto’s general interior quality and design fare very well. Visually, the cabin’s appearance feels more on-par with cars in the next price bracket, which is high praise indeed.

Entry-level ‘1’ models will feel pretty basic inside compared to more expensive cars. You do get front electric windows and a USB port, but it’s worth stepping up to higher-grade cars unless you aren’t too fussed about tech. Picanto ‘2’ cars get Bluetooth connectivity, a height-adjustable driver’s seat and air-conditioning.

Move up from there and luxuries such as a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system are included; this set up comes with sat-nav as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. GT-Line cars are the athletic siblings, and get larger wheels alongside sportier accents and stiffened suspension.

The Picanto is available with the following safety features and driver aids:

  • Six airbags
  • Cruise control
  • Rear parking sensors
  • Autonomous emergency braking
  • Electronic stability control (ESC)

Is the Kia Picanto right for me?

There’s plenty of city cars to choose from on the market, but the Kia Picanto has to be up there with the best of them thanks to its stylish appearance and efficient range of engines. Throw in a large (for this class of car) boot alongside affordable running costs and the Picanto really makes sense if you’re looking for this kind of car.

The Volkswagen up! is a natural contender and has been a class-leader for some time now, although the SEAT Mii is a cheaper alternative that’s built on the same platform and is even available with all-electric power. A Toyota Aygo is always worth a look too, featuring a bolder interior design alongside Toyota’s impressive reliability record.
